Dartmouth Provost resigns over AI use—Is something else going on?
News was making the rounds recently that Santiago Schnell, Provost of Dartmouth College, has resigned from the College over undisclosed AI use, following an investigation by Dartmouth (pdf).
Reading through the available information, I’m having a hard time squaring what he did with leaving entirely. Failing to give disclosures for his papers could push him to step down as Provost, but remain as tenured faculty.
I can say for sure that what we know he did with AI—asking for feedback, making revisions to .tex files, writing code—is what tons of people are doing right now. And not disclosing.
From the Ars article:
Indeed, Schnell’s own description of what he did with AI doesn’t sound, on the long list of AI-powered sins, like it would rank near the top. But it’s hard to know. As the Dartmouth committee points out, the full scope of Schnell’s AI use was unclear to them. The committee believes that Schnell’s public statements may understate “the nature of the Provost’s actual AI use” and says that Schnell regularly “went beyond his other public descriptions of his use of AI in writing.”
It seems Schnell was not forthcoming with Dartmouth’s President and with the committee that investigated him. Perhaps this is just another case where the cover-up is worse than the crime?
Or, perhaps, besides AI use, there’s something else going on…?
